Tarpaulin / Waterproof Canvas Tarps Making Machine

HDPE woven tarpaulins (commonly known as poly tarps or waterproof canvas) are heavy-duty, weather-resistant covers used in construction, agriculture, transportation, and industrial applications. Manufactured from high-density polyethylene (HDPE) flat yarn, on the circular loom weave into tubular woven fabric and in-line center unfold by heat slitting unit or ultrasonic slitting system into open flat woven fabric, then outside-laminated with PE melt and processing with hot air welding machine into large-format sheets and through the converting process to be final products - Tarpaulin; tarpaulins provide durable UV resistance, waterproofing, and tear strength for demanding outdoor environments.

At Hao Yu Precision Machinery Industry Co., Ltd., we have supplied complete tarpaulin manufacturing lines since 1980. Our turnkey solutions cover every stage — from flat yarn extrusion through circular loom weaving, outside lamination, rewinding, hot air welding, and eyeletting — delivering high-output lines with consistent lamination quality, precise sheet dimensions, and reliable seam strength for tarpaulin producers worldwide.

Detailed Tarpaulin Manufacturing Process

01

Raw Materials Mixer (HY7-400)

This mixer uniformly blends PP/HDPE resin with additives (CaCo3, UV stabilizers, recycled polymer & colorants) before extrusion. With a capacity of 400 kg per full tank and a 2.25 kW gear reduction motor (dimension: 2,000 mm x 1,150 mm x 1,200 mm), it ensures homogeneous material composition critical for consistent flat yarn color & quality.

02

PP/HDPE High Speed Flat Yarn Extrusion Line (HE Series)

PP/HDPE granules are melted and extruded into flat yarn (raffia). Max. PP melting output reaches 100/ 160/ 240/ 320/ 420/ 520/ 600 kg/hr.; Max. HDPE melting output reaches 80/ 120/ 190/ 250/ 320/ 400/ 480 kg/hr. Equipped with a plastics melt pump, belt-type screen filter changer, pro-back up long-life filter and rotary blade slitting system, the take-off unit is controlled by a pneumatic system, electronically tension control winder and synchronized central electronic control box — ensuring consistent yarn width, tensile strength and a flat & even winding edge.

03

6 Shuttles Circular Loom (HY7-m6SCL1+)

The six-shuttle circular loom weaves flat yarn into tubular woven fabric and doing in-line center unfold into open flat fabric — the structural base layer of the tarpaulin. Woven fabric weight and weave density are selected to meet the tarpaulin's target gsm specification and tear strength requirements. The tubular fabric is subsequently slit open into flat fabric for the lamination and sheet-forming stages downstream. Hao Yu's six shuttle circular looms deliver consistent fabric quality at high throughput.

04

High Efficiency Outside Lamination Machine (HY7/LH-120)

The woven fabric passes through an outside lamination machine, which applies a PE (polyethylene) melt coating to the surface of the flat PE woven fabric. This dual-side PE lamination provides the tarpaulin's core waterproofing barrier, UV resistance, and surface smoothness. Lamination thickness, coating uniformity, and bond strength are the critical quality parameters at this stage — determining the tarpaulin's performance in outdoor rain, sun, and wind exposure.

05

Reel to Reel Rewinding Machine

The laminated fabric jumbo roll is rewound at controlled tension to produce uniform, crease-free rolls of precise length for the downstream operations and sells to consumer for their own utilities. Rewinding process also allows for quality inspection of the laminated surface before sheet assembly.

06

Multiple Modules Hot Air Welding Machine

Multiple widths of laminated fabric are joined edge-to-edge by hot air welding — a heat-fusion process that melts the PE lamination surfaces together to form a continuous waterproof seam without stitching or adhesives. Hot air welding produces seams with peel and shear strength equal to or greater than the base fabric, ensuring that the tarpaulin's waterproof integrity is maintained at every joint.

Also at the same working process is both-sides rope wrapping & hemming of the tarpaulin edge, which provides the tarpaulin edge with greater mechanical property reinforcement. The multiple modules hot air welding machine enables the fabrication of large-format tarpaulins of any required width beyond the loom's production width.

07

Eyeletting Machine

Metal eyelets are integrated by punching and set at regular intervals around the PE tarpaulin perimeter. Eyelets provide reinforced attachment points for ropes, bungee cords, and hooks, allowing the tarpaulin to be secured over loads, structures, truck covers, camping tents, or agricultural fields. Eyelet spacing, size, and material (typically aluminum or stainless steel) are specified to match the tarpaulin's load application and end-use longevity requirements.

08

Finished Tarpaulin

The completed laminated PE woven tarpaulins are waterproof, UV-stabilized, and reinforced with eyelets for secure tie-down. Standard applications include construction site covers, camping tents, agricultural mulch and crop protection sheets, truck and cargo covers, outdoor equipment protection, and disaster relief shelters. Finished tarpaulins are folded and packed for retail, wholesale, or export distribution.

FAQ — Tarpaulin / Waterproof Canvas Production Line

Q:
What raw materials are used to manufacture HDPE woven tarpaulins?
A:

The raw materials can be virgin grade or recycle grade HDPE polymer and blended with additives such as masterbatch, UV stabilizer, CaCo3, etc.

Tarpaulins are produced from polypropylene (PP) or high-density polyethylene (HDPE) resin granules for the woven base fabric, and polyethylene (PE) resin for the lamination coating. UV stabilizer masterbatch is blended into both the yarn and the lamination film to achieve outdoor durability. Pigment masterbatch is added for standard tarpaulin colors (blue, green, silver, orange, etc.).

Q:
What machines are required for a complete tarpaulin production line?
A:

The list of required equipment mainly as follows:

  1. Raw materials mixer
  2. High speed flat yarn extrusion line
  3. Mini six shuttles circular loom
  4. Lamination machine
  5. Reel to Reel Rewinding Machine
  6. Multiple Modules Hot Air Welding Machine
  7. Eyeletting Machine
  8. Downstream auxiliary
  9. Quality control equipment

A complete line requires: (1) Mixer Machine, (2) Flat Yarn Extrusion Line, (3) Circular Looms (6 or 8 shuttles), (4) Outside Lamination Machine, (5) Rewinding Machine, (6) Hot Air Welding Machine, and (7) Eyeletting Machine. The hot air welding machine is unique to tarpaulin production — it joins laminated fabric panels into large-format sheets with waterproof seams.

Q:
Why is hot air welding used instead of stitching for tarpaulin seams?
A:

For high speed production and to prevent water leakage, tarpaulins are highly recommended to be processed with hot air welding.

Stitching creates needle holes that compromise waterproof performance — even with seam tape, stitch holes can leak under heavy rain or hydrostatic pressure. Hot air welding melts the PE lamination surfaces together, forming a continuous waterproof bond at the seam with no penetrations. The resulting weld seam has peel and shear strength comparable to the base fabric, maintaining waterproof integrity at all joined edges.

Q:
What are the standard applications for PP/HDPE woven tarpaulins?
A:

Standard applications include construction site covers, camping tents, agricultural mulch and crop protection sheets, truck and cargo covers, outdoor equipment protection, and disaster relief shelters.

PP/HDPE woven tarpaulins are used across construction (site covers, scaffold enclosures, debris containment), agriculture (crop covers, silage covers, greenhouse side walls, mulch sheets), transportation (truck covers, cargo tarps), outdoor storage, industrial covers, and humanitarian relief (emergency shelter panels, flood barriers). Their combination of waterproofing, UV resistance, tear strength, and low weight makes them suitable for virtually all outdoor protective covering applications.
